Streetcar Now Operational on River Street

A gleaming yellow and green 1930s-era streetcar creaked slowly along River Street. The car will seat about 50 and will accomodate another 50 standing passengers. It is outfitted with wheelchair lifts and powered by the biodiesel-electric hybrid power-plant. A round-trip fare will cost 50 cents.
The streetcar system cost the city about $1 million, with nearly $600,000 spent to buy the tracks to River Street and $207,000 to restore the streetcar. Another $100,000 went for engineering costs.
Because Savannah has kept so much of its rail system intact, it was able to save millions in the initial investment and could expand the streetcar system if merited according to a transit authority.
The new/old street car is a welcome addition to River Street because the cobble stones and bricks can make it difficult to traverse, especially for the handicapped and the elderly. Besides the nostalgia of the vintage streetcar is an additional benefit.
