A Day at the Beach

Today, at 1:30, I set out for the beach. Tybee Beach that is. I left the
office and it was a picture perfect day. 84 degrees and not a clould in the
sky. While driving on the Islands Expressway, I passed Whitemarsh (locals
pronounce it Whitmarsh) and Wilmington Islands. After passing the Diamond
Casino boat I looked out on the beauty of the marsh and kept driving as a
cargo ship was pulling into Savannah. Many locals forget, or become numb to
the beauty of the drive. Although my wife and I live on Wilmington, we
don't make the trip to the beach as often as we would like.

Tybee Island is about 15 miles due east of our historic downtown. Of
course, that depends on where you are downtown. But no matter where you are,
it is just a short trip!

When I got to the island I passed Douglas's Fish Art and took a right on
Butler Ave. A right is the only way to turn unless you want to end up in
the Atlantic! I drove down Butler to the stop light at 15th St. and turned
left. Here you will find plenty of public parking spaces and have close
access to the pier. Also, you are close to the Tybee Island Marine Science
Center. This is a great place for the whole family! Here you will learn
about the marine life in and around Tybee Island. Also, Tis the Season for
Sea Turtles! Several sea turtles make it back each year to their birth
place to lay their eggs. The watch for there annual return starts in May.
Please report seeing any turtle tracks in the sand to the Tybee Island
Marine Center! *Leave all nests alone!*

It is easy for tourists visiting our wonderful city to stay in the historic
downtown. There is no doubt, that one could have a full schedule of things
to see and do downtown. All that aside, sometimes it is just nice and
relaxing going to the beach. Please remember to bring sun screen. While
walking on the pier I saw many sun burned tourists!

There is something to be said about the sound of the waves and the smell of
the salt water. It makes me want to return over and over again. So, when
you are in Savannah, take a trip to the beach. Who knows, you may see some
baby sea turtles!
